My Top 10 Halloween Songs, Starting Tomorrow
Starting tomorrow, I’m counting down my ten favorite Halloween songs, one a day, with #1 landing on Halloween night.
Before I start, a disclaimer.
This list is the take of a kid who grew up in Southern California in the 80s with KROQ on the radio and loved Halloween more than any other holiday. That’s the whole methodology. If you grew up in a different town, on a different station, or in a different decade, your list would look nothing like mine, and it would be just as legit.
Halloween music could go a bazillion different directions. Novelty songs. Horror-movie scores. Classical pieces that cartoons and old monster movies claimed for themselves. All of it is legit, and I love all of it. But when I think about what Halloween sounds like, I hear what came out of my radio in the ’80s: dark, moody, a little theatrical.
So this is my take, not the definitive one. Expect a few picks you saw coming and a few you didn’t.
It’s not locked in yet
The list is mostly finished, but not 100%. Over the next ten days, send me your suggestions. Tell me what I’m missing, what you’d swap out, and what your #1 would be. If something makes a strong enough case, it might sneak in. Anything that doesn’t make it this year goes on the list for next year.
How to follow along
A new song goes up here every day through Halloween, and I’ll post each one on Mastodon and Facebook too. Reply there, comment here, or send me a message. I want to hear what Halloween sounds like to you.
See you tomorrow for #10. 🎃
